Financial aid falls into many categories. Students may receive scholarships or grants that do not have to paid back. These scholarships can be merit-based (based upon grades and test scores), need-based (based upon family income), or a combination of both.  Students may qualify for work-study programs that provide jobs to help offset the cost of college. In addition, there are student loans that do not have to be paid back until after the student has graduated and is working.
