School Newspaper

Remember the Purple Press?

For 75 years Hoover High has supported student journalism through its student newspaper publication, The Tornado Times, formerly The Purple Press.

A high school newspaper is important for it documents events as they happen throughout the year. The newspaper acts as a time capsule, providing a glimpse into what people were talking about at a particular time.

In 1997, the student editors desired to take the newspaper in a more professional direction, and so a name change occurred, The Tornado Times, the fourth name in the school's history.

The Tornado Times and its student reporters and editors have received numerous accolades over the years, including "Best Student Paper in the Valley" by The Los Angeles Times in 2000, and the prestigious George H. Gallup Award by Quill and Scroll in 1998 and 2000.

No matter the name, the newspaper is a unique and critical asset chronicling the school's history. Students come up with their own ideas, lay out their own pages, take their own photographs, draw their own graphics, conduct their own meetings and interviews, oversee their own budget, sell their own advertising, and edit their own work. And the entire community is able to see the students' superb work free-of-charge every month.
